Why Resistance Training is Important
Resistance training (also known as strength training or weight training) is the use of resistance to muscular contraction to build the strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles.
A well-rounded fitness program includes resistance training. Resistance training improves joint function, bone density, and muscle, tendon, and ligament strength helping to reduce the risk of injury. Strength training also helps to prevent or control chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, back pain, depression, and obesity. Lifting weights improves mobility, flexibility, and balance helping you remain independent as you age.
Many people believe they will get “bulky” when they incorporate resistance training into their fitness routine when in fact it will do just the opposite. Resistance training will help tighten and tone your body, burn fat, and shape your curves.
As we age we tend to see a decline in our metabolism and a decrease in our muscle mass. By incorporating resistance training into your fitness routine, you will build strength and lean muscle mass. As you build lean muscle mass you are actually increasing your metabolic rate, meaning you are increasing your metabolism and your bodies ability to burn calories while at rest. This is why it is so important to include resistance training in your fitness routine especially when you are trying to “lose weight.”
Resistance training improves your sense of wellbeing and may boost your self-confidence, improve your body image, and your mood/self-esteem. With time and a proper coach you will begin to see incredible changes to your body. You will begin to see muscles you never thought you had and curves that you will love!
